The Story Behind Prairie Made's Plantable Paper: Safe, Sustainable, and Beautiful

At Prairie Made Company, we believe that sustainability should be woven into every aspect of our business, from the products we create to the way they are packaged. That’s why we’ve taken an innovative approach to our jewelry display cards, crafting them from plantable paper embedded with wildflower seeds.

When your jewelry arrives, it’s not just beautifully presented—it’s also the start of something new. By planting these cards, you can transform your packaging into a vibrant garden. Here’s everything you need to know about how to plant them, why it’s safe, and the unique benefits of this eco-friendly paper.

What Is Plantable Paper?

Plantable paper is a biodegradable paper embedded with seeds, made from post-consumer and post-industrial paper waste. No trees are harmed in the making of this paper. When you plant the paper in soil, the seeds sprout and the paper composts away, leaving behind only flowers, herbs, or vegetables. It's an easy and waste-free way to contribute to the environment.

Our Wildflower Seed Blend

The wildflower seed blend used in our jewelry display cards includes species selected to thrive in North American gardens. The blend includes:

  • Black-Eyed Susan (Perennial): A golden, sunflower-like bloom that thrives in prairie lands and attracts birds, bees, and butterflies.
  • Bird's Eye (Annual): A daisy-like flower known for its vibrant colors and ability to attract hummingbirds.
  • Clarkia (Annual): A hardy wildflower that blooms late in the season, often called “Farewell-to-Spring.”
  • Catchfly (Annual): A resilient flower that thrives in poor soil and high temperatures.
  • Sweet Alyssum (Annual): A low-growing plant with sweet-smelling flowers that bloom throughout the growing season.
  • Snapdragon (Annual): A colorful and easy-to-grow flower that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies.

How to Plant Your Jewelry Display Card

Supplies You'll Need:

  • A pot for planting
  • Good quality potting soil
  • Water
  • A sunny spot for your pot

Step 1: Prepare Your Pot

Fill your pot 2/3 full with potting soil. Tamp down the soil gently and add more if necessary to ensure the pot is firmly filled, but not packed. You can plant the paper indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather.

Step 2: Plant the Paper

Place your jewelry display card on top of the soil in the pot. It’s okay if the paper overlaps. Cover the paper with a thin layer of soil, about 1/8 inch deep. Gently tamp down the soil over the paper.

Step 3: Water During Germination

Water the pot thoroughly after planting. Keep the paper and soil consistently moist during the first 10 days, as moisture is essential for germination. However, ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent water from pooling.

Step 4: Care After Germination

Once sprouts appear, continue to keep the soil moist but be careful not to overwater. As the plants grow stronger, water them as needed. Soon, you'll see your jewelry display card transform into a beautiful display of wildflowers.
